  • Cajitas, Totem Box Bronze Turquoise and Abalone on Leather Cord - Gloria Sawin Fine Jewelry

    Gloria Sawin Fine Jewelry

Cajitas, Totem Box Bronze Turquoise and Abalone on Leather Cord

    $450.00

    Cajitas

Little Totem Boxes - personal jewelry to be worn through all the times of your life. They are today’s Medicine pouch, Personal to the wearer in every way.  Each holds your story, tiny treasures and secret wishes given and worn in love.

Bronze totem box on Leather Cord with Kingman Turquoise arco and an Abalone Bead to adjust the length.  2” x 2” on 36” adjustable cord.

Absolutely my favorite design so far.  So much love and attention goes into each one.  This piece was patinated over 3 days to create the beautiful Bronze color.  It will last forever.  The carvings were made by my husband, John Hull and are so warm and graceful.

The Kingman turquoise mine, in Arizona, is the last remaining commercially producing mine in the United States. Evidence suggests turquoise was mined in the surrounding areas dating as far back as 600 AD.

The mine where a piece of Turquoise was found—not its color, nor its matrix, which refers to the veins and patterns of the stone—is the primary factor in determining its value. Historically speaking, the finest turquoise came from the mountains of Asia. In the 20th century, however, the copper-rich American Southwest supplanted them as the primary source of rare, and valuable, specimens, including collector favorites such as Bisbee, Lander Blue, and Number 8 (Black Web). Tibetan Turquoise is highly prized.  Hubei also has some of the most beautiful natural Turquoise

     Abalone

Since abalone gradually develops in the ocean, it's associated with the emotional tides we face.

Despite being turned and tossed around by ocean tides, the stone still comes out beautiful. Thinking of this phenomenon during challenging times in your life can be motivational. It shows that you too can go through tough times and emerge stronger and more beautiful than ever.

Beyond this motivational factor, abalone's vibrations have a soothing effect that can help you calm down when you're stressed out. It enhances the Four C's, which increases the ability to control your emotions under pressure.

The Cerrillos Turquoise mine is a turquoise mine located in the Cerrillos Hills, 20 miles southwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is one of the oldest and most important turquoise mines in North America.

The Cerrillos Hills have been mined for turquoise since at least the 12th century. The turquoise from Cerrillos was prized by the Ancestral Puebloans, who used it to make jewelry and other objects. The Spanish also mined turquoise in Cerrillos, and the mine was active until the early 20th century.

The Cerrillos Turquoise mine is a open-pit mine. The turquoise is found in veins that run through the sandstone. The turquoise is mined by hand and then sorted by quality. The best turquoise is used to make jewelry, while the lower-quality turquoise is used for other purposes, such as making paint.

The Cerrillos Turquoise mine is a popular tourist destination. Visitors can tour the mine and learn about the history of turquoise mining in Cerrillos. The mine is also a popular spot for rockhounds, who come to search for turquoise.

Turquoise mining in the Burro Mountains near Silver City, New Mexico, has been going on since pre-historic times.  The Tyrone mine produced great quantities of hard, deep and bright turquoise as well as pale spring green turquoise.   "Turquoise John" or John Coleman, is credited with the modern unearthing of Turquoise in this area.  It is said he discovered some of the old mining activities while he was on a hunting trip in 1875.  Research resulted in the discovery of the ancient excavations.

The mine hasn't produced any turquoise since the 80's.  This turquoise is highly collectible.

Quartz crystal was once believed to be an eternal ice sent by the heavenly gods. Until the late 1500s, many scholars thought this stone was fossilized ice. Quartz crystal is actually a mineral, one of the most abundant minerals in the Earth's continental crust, composed of silicon and oxygen.

Quartz can be icy clear or have inclusions, veils, bubbles and various colors. It is also known as rock crystal, crystal quartz, universal crystal or clear quartz.

People in the earliest recorded times believed in the magical powers of quartz. Ancient Roman, Egyptian and Greek civilizations used quartz crystals as potent talismans.  The word crystal comes from the Greek word "krystallos," which means ice.
